Country music and songwriting lost one of its most prolific voices when Brett James Cornelius, known professionally as Brett James, died in a small plane crash on September 18, 2025, in Franklin, North Carolina. He was 57. 

Authorities confirm that a Cirrus SR22T aircraft, registered to him and departing from Nashville, crashed near Iotla Valley Elementary School. All three people aboard were killed. Students and staff at the nearby school were unharmed.

Brett James’s story was anything but ordinary. Born on June 5, 1968, in Columbia, Missouri, he initially pursued a career in medicine but ultimately followed his passion for music.

He released his debut solo album in 1995, but his real breakthrough came as a songwriter. Over the years, he penned or co-wrote hundreds of songs for country and pop stars alike, amassing more than 400 recording credits. His songs have sold tens of millions of albums globally.
